The market for podcasting in recent months has become overly saturated with copy-cats. From folks who are trying to be the next, "Early Round", to folks trying to reproduce the success of the "The Read", listening to podcasts has proven to me that not all of them are created equal.
I remember searching the podcast streets a few weeks ago after coming home from being in traffic for two hours. I was highly agitated because on this day, I had listened to every podcast I subscribed to and I just couldn't listen to the Solange album again.
Alas, I found Jade&XD. I remember first turning it on and thinking to myself, "please don't let this be another copy-cat, please don't let this be ANOTHER COPY-CAT!" and to my surprise, it was not.
What I found was pure excellence and this is why this show gets my rainbow spotlight of the week.
From the first show I listened to, I found two individuals who truly loved everything about their life. You could hear in their voices and in their stories that they are two normal ass people living normal ass lives. What I love most about the show is that at times, they will get on a conversation topic and they will just let the conversation go. No need for forced fanfare, you can tell that they genuinely love talking with one another.
Why this show deserves the spotlight:
XD holds my heart and my attention for several reason, specifically for always centering his queer identity in the stories that he shares. From episodes where he's mentioning he fighting the weight loss battle, to episode where he is talking about how terrible the LGBTQ community is, XD is never afraid to tell you that being Black in the LGBTQ community is tough. One of my favorite things about XD is that he, like I, is always looking for a great sandwich or some good fried chicken.
And in the mean streets of NYC: That my friend, is often hard to come by.
My favorite story that XD has shared in the podcast is the story he told about getting a sandwich maker fired. Now while the story is a bit fucked up, I appreciated the principle:
If I am here making a purchase, please don't hassle me about my sexuality. Thanks.
Jade, on the other hand, is my favorite because she is by far the perfect ally. In some of the stories that she has shared, she has made mention about stepping up or even speaking up for not only XD, but for other LGBTQ individuals she loves. In addition, Jade will remind you that she's about that life, and goes hard for not only her baby, but her husband and her friends.
She's truly a keeper.
Some of my favorite things about listening to Jade is not only the way she tells a story, but she always ends her stories with a great point. Whether she's talking about how much she hates one of her co-workers (as do I) or how much she can't stand a certain product, artist or food item, Jade has a way of reminding us that it is okay to laugh at the terrible things that happen to you on the regular, while reminding you not to take yourself to seriously. Plus her laugh is HIGHLY infectious.
In all, Jade&XD is the perfect podcast because it is not only funny, timely and present, but it is real.
